  • The core of the SA A CTC  is the Formal Training Wing  which presents the following courses:

    • Junior Command and Staff Duty Practical (JCSD Prac).

    • Integrated Sub-unit Commanders (ISUC).

    • Senior NCO Operational Duties.

  • The wing had its origin  as the "Course Branch" of the SA Army Battle School in the late 1970s.  The wing developed into an independent unit known as "Training Group" up to October 2000 and is currently known as "Formal Training Wing" and functions as part of the SA A CTC.  The wing commander is Col B. Dhlamini and the Wing WO is WO1 M.A. Linde.

  • In order to carry out their responsibility, the wing consists of the JCSD branch, ISUC branch and the NCO branch.  Other branches with specialist instruction capabilities are:

    • Air Defence Arty branch.

    • Arty branch.

    • Armour branch.

    • Infantry branch.

    • Engineer branch.

    • Intelligence branch.

    • Service Arms branch.

  • Further course support is rendered to the wing from the Forward Air Command Post and the Medical Command Post also situated at Lohatlha.

  • The JCSD Practical course, is a course where the student learn the theoretical knowledge and practical skills and behaviour to be a combat group commander or Staff officer Grade 1.  The course is specifically directed at the combination and integration of the different arms of service into one effective fighting force.

  • The ISUC Theory and Practical courses are presented at Integrated Sub-unit level or SO2 of the specific corps. Again these courses provide the learner with knowledge, attitudes and skills to function as a combat team commander or a Staff officer Grade 2 within a brigade.

  • The Snr NCO Ops Duty course is presented with the purpose of developing echelon commanders and supporting staff at unit and brigade level.  The course equips NCOs with practical knowledge and skills in the logistical combat support environment.

  • Theory and practical courses are presented separately.  The practical course culminate into an integrated practical exercise, involving a force of brigade level.  During this exercise practical skills taught during the courses are tested and assessed.
